HISTORY OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

 

Kusadasi

     The name Chamber Of Commerce was first expressed by the French in 1601 for a temporary commission that examining the industrial and commercial problems in Paris. By the year of 1774, it was submitted to establish chambers of commerce especially in harbour towns. After the prohibition during the French Revolution, chambers were re-established by Napoleon in1804. After France,England and United States formed their earliest chambers of commerce.

     The positively changes in the economy of Ottomans during the 19th century, were primarily due to the chambers of commerce. The earliest Ottoman Chambers Of Commerce were generally consisted of non-Muslim minority, who were the experts of commerce during that period.

THE KUSADASI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

     The Kusadasi Chamber of Commerce was among the first chambers of commerce to be established during the days of the Ottoman Empire. It was formed in 1899.

     After the Turkish War of Independence, the Kusadasi Chamber of Commerce was closed because the many Greeks, Armenians and Jews who were involved in commerce left the region. After the Republic had been formed ,the Chambers of Commerce were reorganized and on October 25 1925, under article number 655 of the Articles of The Chambers of Commerce, the Kusadasi Chamber was re-established. With this new mandate, the Kusadasi Chamber of Commerce began activities again in 1926. However, after Kusadasi was placed under the province of  Aydin, the Chamber of  Commerce was closed and reopened again only in 1992. At present it has 1904 registered members.
